At the end of the century, artists' studios resembled small museums and sand, furnished with antique furniture, copper vessels, Oriental curtains and textiles. In these museum-style studios, artists often hold receptions and sell their works. Both writers and Impressionists used this method to display and sell their works. Courbet's painting The Studio shows a kind of reception in his studio as shown in Figure 1; "Bazille's Studio" depicts a typical painter's studio at the end of the century, with pianos, stoves, wide Windows with black curtains to control light, and tall buildings for rest.
Modernist artists usually have smaller studios. For example, Picasso's studio on Rue Critz in Paris is only a dozen square meters, and there are few paintings on the walls. Picasso depicted this room in his painting The Blue Room. Cezanne's studio in Aix had easels suitable for large paintings, but no works hung on the walls. Modern painters generally do not have superfluous decorations in their painting rooms, but have bookshelves or bookcases.
Mexican painter Freinda Culff became disabled after an accident and did many of her works while lying in bed. She used her bedroom as a studio and fitted mirrors and a special easel to paint. In this environment, she painted powerful and dramatic self-portraits.
