Understand what collage is

Collage means that in the process of painting, in order to obtain a unique artistic effect, the use of objects, such as newspapers, pictures, photos, etc., according to the design intention to cut into the required shape, pasted on the picture. Through the texture produced by the painting itself, the movement of the contours, and the contrast and echo of the color blocks, the materiality of the pasted object is changed, and the author's meaning is expressed concretely or abstractly.

Collage is inseparable from folk paper-cutting and cubism art. Cubism broke the traditional concept of modeling, sought new ways of expression, did not take into account the truth of the image, and painted in a way that was only related to their own thoughts. Try to show all aspects of the same image or the change of the same image in a certain period of time. This technique of disassembling and reassembling objects has been further developed into pasting drawings and oil paintings with newspaper, wrapping paper, thin wood, glass, cloth strips and other objects related to the subject of the painting, making the works into physical objects that can be touched by hands. This method has created a new idea that the painter does not depend on the objective image but only on his subjective attainments.
George Brac, one of the representatives of Cubism, was the earliest to introduce ready-made materials such as newspapers into painting.
The Violin and the Pipe was created by Blakerne using a combination of newspaper, wallpaper collage and charcoal techniques. It accentuates the picture while using the overlap of different materials to suggest a sense of space.
Collage is not a unique art form of modern painting, and the early Italian church paintings are excellent examples of the aesthetic expression of materials by using the background color to combine the glossy color with the gold leaf. The magnificence of the gold leaves is enhanced by embossing patterns on the plaster base, polishing the gold leaves, or occasionally embellishing them with precious stones and jade. These religious works, created by combining painting pigments with gold leaves, inspired Klimt's exploration of synthetic materials. He made dreamy stylized arrangements of rhythmic patterns formed by embossed gold leaves and gold pigments, and combined this arrangement with curvy movement and beautiful human form, as shown in Figure 47. In order to achieve novelty and fashion, Klimt pursued the metaphor of decoration, and inlaid marble, gold and silver foil, copper, coral, mother-of-pearl and other materials into his oil paintings, which greatly enriched the expression characteristics of modern oil painting language.
