How to apply black and white oil colors

(1) The application of white oil paint:
① White, as a color with high brightness and strong coverage, is commonly used to brighten a local color.
Mixing white with any other color will increase the brightness and reduce the purity of this color.

The equal amount of mixing with black can produce pure gray, and the unequal amount of mixing will get different shades of gray.
To lighten the color, mixing white is not the only way. In nature, any color changes with the intensity of the light. Like red, when it darkens it tends to be blue-violet and when it brightens it tends to be orange. In other words, orange must be added to brighten the red.
(2) The application of black oil paint:
Black and any other color blending may become dirty color.
Black as an exclusive color, generally applied to the screen alone, or mixed with white to use gray.
③ Traditional ways to blend black are:
Dark red + ripe brown + half green = warm black
Ripe brown + plum-blue + half emerald green = cold black
Ripe brown + emerald green + dark red = neutral black
(3) The use of white and black in modern oil painting:
Classical oil painting uses white pigments, in addition to color mixing, mainly to strengthen the contrast between light and dark, so that the pigment becomes opaque and thick paint in the bright part, the purpose is to use white to brighten the color. Modern oil paintings, especially Impressionist painters, generally add white to the paint after observing the outdoor light, so that the overall color of the picture becomes brighter. Manet, Monet, Seurat and other impressionist painters used different degrees of color mixed with lead white to increase the brightness of the color and obtain the natural light color effect.
Black is not found in the spectrum, so the Impressionists eliminated black from their color palettes. Then they learned to blend black. Bring together pure colors such as ultramarine, magenta and verdant green to make it close to black. Renoir called black the queen of colors, Lautrec, Cezanne, Gauguin, Matisse, Picasso and other modern outstanding oil painters use black in their paintings, which makes their painting colors full of deep power.
